Estimates are extremely useful in times when exact calculations or estimates are not possible or too costly. Other times, of course, Estimates are dangerous. For example, it is OK to Estimate how long it will take to drive somewhere (an exact calculation isn’t possible because so much is out of our control), but not OK to Estimate where to cut a board (measure twice, cut once!). Having a good understanding of when an Estimate is good enough is practical wisdom.
